FIVE clubs took to the Brunei Bay yesterday in the first day of the 2009 Borneo Interport Regatta & Optimist Challenge at the Royal Brunei Yacht Club (RBYC) in Serasa.
Currently in its 55th edition, the competition was not held last year but resumed this year with the RBYC taking its turn to organise the two-day event which ends today.
The Kuala Belait Boat Club (KBCC), Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC), Royal Brunei Armed Forces Yacht Club (RBAF), Sarawak Sailing Club (SSC) and hosts RBYC are the five clubs that are taking part.
According to RBYC’s general manager Saiman Abdullah, races will be sailed in a double round robin format of six round robin races per round, making for 12 races in total over the two days.
In addition, the event is divided into two classes ISO (Isometric) and Optimist.
The former category involves fast and sophisticated dinghies where each dinghy can accommodate two sailors while the latter can accommodate only one and is only for younger sailors.
“The weather was fantastic today (Saturday) and we enjoyed strong winds from morning until evening,” said Saiman.
“A total of 48 sailors are taking part in the event, but if you include coaches and managers I think we should have about 100 people,” he added.
The Sandakan Yacht Club won both the Dusty Millar Trophy as winners of the ISO class and the Optimist Regatta as winners of the Optimist class the last time the event was held in 2007 in Miri, Sarawak, at the Piasau Boat Club.
