Bandar Seri Begawan – Thirty-seven Secondary Mathematics teachers nationwide were taught various teaching methods and techniques to spark interest and help students enjoy learning the subject more, at a teaching workshop that was held as part of the 17th eXPLOMATHS 2009 activities.
The workshop for government and non-government schoolteachers was hosted by the PJN Pg Abu Bakar School Secondary School at Kampong Pandan, Kuala Belait.
Similar workshops have been carried out earlier in April and May for different groups of teachers and yesterday was the final part of the workshop, which was conducted by University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) lecturer, Mr John Suffolk
The school’s Head of Department for Mathematics, Mrs Corina Tia explained that the workshop allows teachers to identify their teaching weaknesses and find methods to improve it in order to convey the lesson more effectively.
The workshop also taught teachers about number’s sense and ways to use simple counting methods to enhance their Mathematics teaching skills. In addition, teachers can also use various teaching aids to assist the student’s in better understanding and create for a fun learning experience.
Mrs Tia also noted that special emphasis is made for Mathematics, as it is one of the school’s core subjects.
The workshop is part of the 17th eXPLOMATHS 2009 activities with the theme Tun, Play and Learn Mathematics’ and ‘Explore The Enjoyment in Mathematics’ with the objective of teaching Mathematics through play and exploration towards learning effectiveness. – Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
