A BRUNEIAN student, a participant of the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange of Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme from June 10 to July 23, has completed a six-week programme in Japan to gain knowledge of the Japanese culture. The programme is intended to offer students majoring in the Japanese
language at core universities/colleges in East Asian countries, a chance to go to Japan to deepen their knowledge of Japanese language, culture and society through their participation in the Japanese-Language programme.
Twenty-nine participants from nine different countries from Cambodia, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Australia and New Zealand took part in the programme.
Mr Tan Chun Yang, who is a third year student taking BA in Primary Education at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), was the second student from Brunei to further his knowledge not only in the art of Japanese language but also the Japanese culture.
Mr Tan was sent to Osaka for the six-week course not only to learn the Japanese culture but also to expose Brunei’s culture.
In an interview, Mr Tan said, “Since I was young I was interested with the Japanese language. I listen to Japanese songs, read Manga and anime.”
“Not only did I learn more on the Japanese language and culture but also told them about Brunei’s culture,” he added.
The programme consisted of two parts. One was “Experience, Exchange and Present Activity”, which was focused on expressing oneself effectively by using the Japanese language they have learned up to that time through meeting Japanese people.
Another was ‘Future Learning Support Programme’, which was to help the participants to develop new ways of studying Japanese for the future and reviewing his/her previous methods of learning Japanese and to set goals and policies for future studies.
Over 150 local students took part in the Japanese Language studies at UBD in various categories.
Aside from that, UBD is cooperating with the Japanese Embassy in organising a Japanese Language Competition that will be divided into three categories namely, Beginners Category’, ‘Advance Category’ and ‘Open Category’ where as many as 14 participants will compete at the Civil Service Institute on August 15 at nine in the morning.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the competition.
