THE largest photovoltaic solar power plant of its kind in Southeast Asia is expected to be commissioned in Brunei Darussalam in 2010 as the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tenaga Suria Brunei project was held yesterday morning at the site in Seria.
The project is seen as a major step to promote the development of renewable energy in the country.
Once completed, the project is expected to generate some 1.33 MWh of electricity per year and save approximately 340,400 litres of crude oil equivalent and cut about 940 tonnes of CO2 emission annually.
The photovoltaic system with a nominal capacity of 1.2 MW and comprising six different types of advanced photovoltaic modules will be installed at the Seria power station. They will be connected to the existing electricity grid and will be the first instalment of a large-scale photovoltaic system in the country.
The Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed in August last year between the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam represented by the Energy Division at the Prime Minister’s Office and Mitsubishi Corporation.
