THE Brunei Darussalam contingent to the 5th Asean Para Games from Aug 15-19 in Kuala Lumpur are hoping to maintain its medal tally of at least three gold medals.
This year, Brunei Darussalam are sending a strong 44-member contingent comprising 28 athletes, 13 officials and three coaches.
Twenty-five athletes will be contesting in athletics, swimming (two) and chess (one).
Brunei Darussalam obtained four gold, two silver and four bronze medals in the 1st Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, and then in the second edition Vietnam, Brunei collected four gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals.
In the third Para Games in the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam bagged a record of seven gold, six silver and four bronze medals while in the 4th Para Games, Brunei Darussalam won three gold , four silver and 10 bronze medals.
In an interview with Hj Rosmadee bin Hj Md Daud, the chef-de-mission of the Brunei contingent, he said: “We are hoping to maintain our medal tally of three gold from the previous Para Games. And maybe even improve our achievement if it is possible.”
He added that the best chance of grabbing medals is in athletics events.
Meanwhile, Hajah Misnah binti. Hj Bolhassan, the Acting Director of Community Development said in her speech: “The Department of Community Department will continuously unearth and train new athletes who possess mental as well as physical strength and the will to compete.”
She also revealed that the new athletes will also act as successors to the veteran athletes who might retire from the games anytime.
Present to hand over the national flag to Hj Rosmadee yesterday was Dato Paduka Haji Jemat bin Haji Ampal, the Permanent Secretary of Youth and Sports.
