ISLAM encourages its followers to contribute or make a donation in the form of cash or food to lessen the burden of the less fortunate, especially during Ramadhan and Hari Raya.
Yesterday the presentation of donations to orphans in Brunei-Muara and Temburong districts as well as the launching of SMS Prihatin for the National Orphans Fund 2009 took place at Dewan Digadong, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
On hand to present the donations were Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Awg Hj Ahmad bin Hj Jumat, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, Minister of Development, who is also Chairman of BIBD.
Datin Hjh Adina binti Othman, Director of Community Development Department, said, “SMS Brunei Prihatin is an annual project which runs in collaboration with Community Development Department, RTB, DST Group and b.mobile Communications Sdn Bhd. All four agencies act as the joint chairman for the project.”
“This year, 2,221 orphans – 1,351 from Brunei-Muara District, 98 from Temburong District, 472 from Tutong District and 300 from Belait District – are going to receive the donations
.
“To avoid the health risks, village heads will present the donations (to the orphans). Today’s donation event is only for Brunei-Muara and Temburong districts, while (the donation ceremony) for Tutong and Belait districts will be held tomorrow.”
“Village heads, as the representatives to receive the donations today, hopefully will present it (donation) to the orphans before Hari Raya.
“The total amount of donations for this year is $222,100 from the Orphans Fund, while BIBD donated $111,050.”
Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) donated $50 each to 2,221 orphans nationwide, totalling $111,050 as part of its corporate social responsibility to the less fortunate in this holy month of Ramadhan.
The event began with the launching of the SMS Brunei Prihatin 2009, which was followed by the handing over of donation from DST Group which gave $20,000 and b.mobile which donated $5,000.
SMS Brunei Prihatin is from August 26 until October 13, 2009. Those who wish to donate can type YATIM (without space) and the sum of money they wish to donate such as 1.5.10.15 or 20 and send it to 38111 for DST customers and also b.mobile or via WAP portal.
