A CONTRACT signing ceremony for 28 BSP scholarship students took place yesterday at the Brunei Shell Recreation Club.
The event also marked an important milestone in BSP’s scholarship history as the company is embarking on the first petroleum engineering and chemical engineering twinning courses between Institute Technology Brunei (ITB) and University of New South Wales in Australia.
Signing on behalf of BSP were its Deputy Managing Director Haji Zainal Abidin bin Haji Mohd Ali, Head of Human Resources, Planning and Development Hjh Malai Nuridah binte Sheikh Mohammad and Head of Recruitment and Student Affairs Pengiran Hjh Hajijah binte Pengiran Haji Matarsat.
The students, meanwhile, signed the contracts together with their respective sureties.
In a welcoming speech, Haji Zainal said, “It is imperative that we encourage students to explore the fields of science and technology as they hold opportunities, especially in technical and professional disciplines unique to the industry.”
He also said BSP is constantly looking for new young talents to fill up the positions.
“Upon completion of their studies,” Haji Zainal said, “They will be enlisted to the BSP workforce where they will go through a systematic career progression, aimed to enhance their technical and professional competency, including managerial and strategic leadership skills.”
In addition, “they will also have the opportunity to work at other Shell operating units across the world through the international short-term and long-term assignments, which will provide them a hands-on experience to work in other oil and gas organisations within Shell while exposing themselves to different technologies and working environments”.
To date, he said, 90 per cent of its staff are locals, 60 per cent of which are in leadership positions.
The newly awarded students will take on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Brunei, Australia and United Kingdom in technical and highly specialised disciplines such as engineering, geology, geophysics and geosciences.
Additionally, for the first time, BSP is also sponsoring a Higher National Diploma (HND) student for undergraduate studies in the UK, while seven students, as well as two staff members under service sponsorship, will be doing postgraduate studies
The courses are fully funded by both BSP and Shell International, and are the latest initiatives by BSP towards capacity building of the country.
The programme aims to groom more locals into petroleum and chemical engineers amid the growing need to sustain Brunei’s energy industry.
