Fasting throughout the holy month of Ramadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The purpose of fasting is to develop self-discipline in overcoming the desires and passions imbedded in all of humanity.
According to the Imam of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha (RIPAS) mosque, Hj Mohd Afdzillah bin Hj Mohd Yussof, “Islam hopes that through fasting, people can exercise control over their evil desires instead of it being the other way round. Thus, moral discipline is very important and relevant in modern day society”.
Without morals and discipline, all kinds of social ills will surface at a very alarming rate, which is why emphasis is made on being pious and productive. It is for this reason that Muslims are also encouraged to fast from time to time regardless of whether it is Ramadhan or not since the act of fasting can assist us in realising and achieving these goals.
