THE Brunei Japan Friendship Association (BJFA) — UBD Chapter yesterday hosted a gathering session with five students from the Rakuno Gakuen University of Hokkaido, Japan, led by Professor Jun Morikawa at the Chancellor Hall.
The Japanese students, mostly taking environmental studies, arrived in Brunei last Sunday and will be here for one week to learn and experience the Bruneian culture, visit places of interest, and at the same time have a closer look at the environment of Brunei Darussalam.
During yesterday’s mingling session, four speakers form the BJFA— UBD Chapter presented topics on Bruneian customs and traditions, as well as the geography and history of Brunei, in Japanese.
The highlight of the event was a cultural dance performance by the Japanese students called Soran Bushi’, a traditional dance for fisherman in Japan.
BJFA-UBD Chapter is established in the year 2004 by Brunei Japan Friendship Association (BJFA) together with Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The members of BJFAUBD Chapter are comprised of UBD students.
The Japanese students are also going through a ‘home-stay’ programme which began last night with youth members and their families to better understand the Bruneian way of life.
According to Madam Minako Keaney, a Japanese lecturer from the Language Centre of UBD, this is the second group of students from Japan that has come to Brunei. The first group visited Brunei last year and underwent similar programmes and activities.
“This is in line with our organisation’s objectives, to promote the learning and understanding of both Bruneian and Japanese culture. And most importantly to foster friendship among its members,” said Madam Minako.
