A resident living at the housing scheme in Kg Lambak Kanan yesterday voiced his concern over the actions of some children who risk their lives running across the road just to collect broken kites.
According to Awg Ramlee, his friend who was driving all the way from Kuala Belait to visit him for his Hari Raya open house said that the family was shocked when their car nearly ran over a kid who suddenly dashed across the road to chase after a broken kite.
Luckily, they managed to bring the car to a stop and give way to him to cross the road. What would happen if the kid was knocked down? Who is to blame? The driver or parent?, he asked.
He urged parents, especially those living in residential areas, to remind their children of the dangers involved while playing kites in unsafe areas, in this instance, by the road.
He said in view of the Hari Raya celebration, people are going visiting and might not be familiar with the roads at housing areas.
Kite-flying is increasingly popular nowadays, not only among children but also adults, especially during late afternoon.
Meanwhile, the police warned kite-flyers not to play in areas frequented by helicopters and not to disregard safety when chasing kites near roads.
Police said they should fly kites in an open space and that it is the responsibility of all, especially parents and guardians to ensure the safety of the children.
