AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy survived a horrific accident when his neck was slit open by a kite string as he rode his new bicycle.

He was rushed to the Emergency and Accident unit at RIPAS Hospital and his gash, right across his neck, was immediately sutured.

Mohd Nazirul Waie bin Mohd Zain Rosman claimed he was riding his new two-day-old bicycle when he came across a string that cut his neck in the Rimba Housing Scheme area in Gadong (STKRJ Rimba) at around 5pm, Sept 28. The kite strings are dipped in a homemade potion called “belah” that enables a kite-flyer to cut the strings of his opponents.

The boy’s brother, Mohd Nazirul Izzat, 15, who claimed to have witnessed this horrific accident, said the victim was holding his neck with blood flowing. He rushed his brother home to inform their parents.
Their uncle, Pg Khairul Azmi bin Pg Abd Rahman, who was at that time near the victim’s home, said that he panicked on seeing the victim.

Mohd Nazirul Izzat carried his brother through the back door and called his father to rush the victim to the hospital.

“At first, their father thought that this was someone’s doing. But after explanation, he rushed the victim to the hospital. He didn’t have time to wear a shirt or his slippers,” claimed Pg Khairul Azmi.

According to the victim’s uncle, they arrived at the hospital before 6pm and the doctor performed the operation around 9pm.

The victim’s uncle claimed that the kite string had landed on a motorcycle in front of the victim, who was riding his bicycle at that time.

The victim got entangled in the string and in trying to free himself he also cut his fingers. The boy’s mother said that the doctor told them the kite string almost cut his veins connected to the brain. The owner of the kite came forward and apologised to the victim’s family.

Accordingthe residents of the housing scheme, people can be seen flying kites almost every day from four to 6pm. Some of them also complained about being cut by these kite strings.
