New Permanent Secretary appointed

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has officially appointed Hj Mohd ‘Abdoh Dato Seri Setia Hj Abd Salam, formerly Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), as Permanent Secretary of the ministry. The appointment is effective from today, October 16, 2009.

Ex-Cabin crew gets 9-month jail term

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A local man was sentenced to nine months imprisonment for supplying fake medical certificates to his colleagues. According to a press release from the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Mohammad Irnizham Hj Ismail @ Mohammad Nizam Danial Hj Ismail, former cabin crew at the Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) pleaded guilty on 12 counts of charges under Section 471 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22.

An investigation conducted by the bureau revealed that between July to November 2004, the defendant assisted seven cabin crews to use forged medical certificates as genuine in order to obtain sick leaves. The sentence will run concurrently with effect from yesterday as ordered by the Magistrate’s Court Bandar Seri Begawan.

Belait house recipients receive certificates

BELAIT: In a series of house certificate presentations to the poor and needy, the organising committee made up of officers from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Ministry of Development extended their visits to the Belait District yesterday.

The first recipient, Hjh Banun Mahmud received the certificate to her home which was built at a cost of $64,000 and was completed on October 4. The home is a three-bedroom stilt house under the category of the home contract. Hjh Banun also received a care package from the Director of Community Development Department, Datin Hjh Adina Othman.

The next certificate presentation was made at the newly refurbished home of Ahmad Hamid, who also received the certificate and care package from the Permanent Secretary and Director. The home, which was refurbished at a cost of $57,682, is a two-bedroom bungalow which will be completed by early November.

The event began with a short briefing at the Mumong Sports Complex followed by a stopover at the homes. The tour then commenced to a Hari Raya visit to houses of community leaders in the Belait District such as the home of the Mumong Village Head and Mukim Belait Sub-district Head.

According to officials from the organising committee, the project, which is called “QuickWin”, is targetting a total of 58 homes by April 2010. Currently, the project is halfway through with 33 homes already constructed and presented to the recipients.

The homes, on top of the financial assistance the recipients are also receiving from the government, is part of the care and consideration that the government is showing towards those that are in dire need of help and those that are not able to support themselves properly.

TAP officers complete Basic Investment Course

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Employees Trust Fund (TAP) aims to keep its staff in touch with the investment field as more staff completed a Basic Investment Training yesterday, a course tailored from Singapore.

During a speech, Yusof Hj Abdul Rahman, Managing Director of TAP, stressed the importance of “continuous education and learning” as part of the self-development required in today’s dynamic and challenging society.

“Investment, in particular, has and shall continue to become an important area for individuals to develop their knowledge in,” he said.

The one-day course, attended by 25 officers and staff, was conducted by Imran Faizal Khan, the actual fund manager. The training is a collaborative effort between TAP’s Investment Department and UOB Asset Management.

They were the second batch of TAP employees to undertake the training after the first took part in August 2008.

SLA hosts Raya gathering

BELAIT: The Sungai Liang Authority (SLA) along with the Brunei Methanol Company and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd yesterday organised a Hari Raya get-together for the Lumut Liang community to show their appreciation for the cooperation they have received.

The ceremony at the Lumut Liang Recreational Centre in Belait saw the presentation of donations to around 59 orphans from the surrounding community, which was presented by Datin Hjh Junaidah Hj Othman, the wife of the Chairman of SLA, YAM Pg Kerma Raja Pg Hj Kamarulzaman Pg Pekerma Setia Diraja Sahibul Bandar Pg Hj Ali. The donations were a joint contribution from all three agencies.

The chairman in his speech expressed his deepest gratitude for the continuous support and understanding towards the successful development of Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK). He also updated the community on the progress of works in SPARK, which includes the construction of SPARK Zone Village.

He added that the Zone Village will include facilities and amenities to complement their presence in the community such as banking facilities, eateries and retail outlets. The zone village will also contain a multipurpose hall to host a variety of events.

The community was also updated on the more community-based construction activities such as the Gerai Tamuneka and the bridge of Jln Sg Liang Kecil.

Present at the gathering was the Assistant Belait District Officer Hj Abd Hamid Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah as well as the Penghulu of Mukim Liang, Sg Liang 1 and 2 Village Heads, and senior officials from all three agencies.
