THE Brunei 7s 2009, the inaugural iRB Asian Rugby 7s Series Tournament, was officially launched yesterday at the Belapan Sports Complex in Berakas.

The minister met and greeted the Rugby 7s teams from the Philippines, Malaysia, Laos, India and Brunei Darussalam, which are participating in the tournament.
The Rugby 7s is set to make its first appearance in the Summer Olympics in 2016 games. Rugby 7s is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players, instead of the usual 15 and the game lasts for only seven minutes in each half.
According to the Brunei Rugby Football Union (BRFU), by hosting this tournament, “it will not only promote the game of rugby but also promote Brunei as a sports tourism destination.”
In conjunction with the tournament, a Rugby Carnival is being held outside the sports complex as a supporting event to attract people as well as spectators.
The organisers are expecting a turn-up of 12,000 people during the two-day event. Members of the public are encouraged to bring their family and friends to support their favourite teams whilst learning more about the game of rugby.
