THE Health Promotion Centre with the support from the Breast Cancer Support Group (BCSG) yesterday hosted a programme to raise awareness about breast cancer in Brunei.

The Pink Ribbon Awareness programme held to mark the National Breast Cancer Awareness for the month of October featured a mini-exhibition that displayed information on the disease as well as talks on issues pertaining to breast cancer for walk-in visitors.

Pamphlets and leaflets were also distributed which teaches the techniques of breast self-examination to interested members of the public.

“Our objective is to educate women with the proper technique of breast self-examination which can consequently save lives and reduce the number of breast cancer patients,” said Senior Staff Nurse at the Community Health Nursing cum Chairperson of BCSG Hjh Jaliha Hj Momin.

In the month of October, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is recognised by survivors, family and friends of survivors and victims of the disease. A pink ribbon is worn to recognise the struggle that sufferers face when battling with the cancer. “The pink ribbon, which is availably distributed for visitors to pin on their shirts today, is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness, and a symbol in honouring the month and our commitment to fight against breast cancer,” she added.

Interested visitors may also fill up forms to participate the support group, with an annual membership fee of $20. “There is a good chance of recovery if the condition is detected early,” said Sarojini Veerasamy, a survivor and an active member of the support group who was sharing her experience with the visitors who came to see the showcase. “The displays and pamphlets are prepared here today for the public to ensure that they are not left in the dark. It is vital that women in Brunei are made aware of the importance of checking their breasts regularly for anything unusual,” she added.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Brunei. Between September 2007 and August 2008, the number of women suffering from breast cancer has risen from 290 to 333
