Record Brunei intake at Loughborough University

Amin Hosni Oct 28th, 2009 .

LOUGHBOROUGH University this week announced that a record number of students from Brunei have registered at the university this year. Engineering remains the most popular field of study for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, the Business School, Chemistry, Mathematics and Economics Departments were also chosen by Bruneian students.

The university stated that the total population of Bruneian students at Loughborough University has now broken the 100 mark, which reasserts Loughborough University as one of the most popular study destinations in the UK for Bruneian students.

The university’s international Office made special arrangements for a coach to collect the new arrivals from the Brunei Students’ Unit in London the week before term started. This warm welcome from the university ensured that the new students were safely transported to their new homes in Loughborough and they were able to meet and receive advice from current students sharing the coach.

For many of the new students, this was not the first time they met current Loughborough students from Brunei. As the most active Brunei Students’ Society in the UK, the Loughborough Students’ Brunei Society (LufBru) hosts an annual ice-breaker session in September in BSB to welcome and socialise with the new Loughborough students.

Besides this, LufBru’s biggest annual event is the popular LufBru Summer Games. This August, over 300 Bruneian students — study ing at UK and local universities — took part in the LufBru Summer Games 2009 in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The event was praised for its outstanding contribution to fostering closer ties between Bruneian students. At this year’s games, the new British High Commissioner to Brunei, Mr Rob Fenn, was present to congratulate the participants.

With a lively community of Bruneians at Loughborough and a continuing record of academic excellence, it is no wonder the popularity of the university remains strong in Brunei.
