First-aid students learn life-saving lessons

TWENTY-FIVE participants of the Basic First Aid Skills Course for Youth began their three-day course at the National Resuscitation Centre (NRC), Ministry of Health, yesterday. Facilitating the course was Senior Nurse/ Coordinator, NRC Pg Hj Abu Bakar Pg Hj Ibrahim.

Apart from its main objective of providing leadership and training, the course is also designed to provide and equip the youths with the knowledge of administrating first aid to injured victims while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

According to the course manager, Aznin Hj Tahir, the programme is conducted by Youth and Sports, Brunei Muara District branch with the cooperation of the Human Resource Centre, MoH, and is open to citizens and permanent residents between the ages of 15 and 25, who are either jobless or have quit school and possess good health.

The course, which is conducted twice a year depending on the centre’s availability, is carried out at the premises ofNRC at Block 2G, Ong Sum Ping Condominium, in the capital.

Participants will undergo three days of training and will be required to sit for a practical and theoretical exam.
The practical examination covers Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) while the theory-based exam will cover first-aid know-how. Participants who achieve 80 per cent and above are eligible to advance to ‘Instructor Level’ should they have the interest to do so.

Yesterday’s session saw participants being briefed on five topics such as the general principles of first-aid, injuries and surrounding emergencies, as well as CPR.

They engaged in practical demonstrations before sitting for their practical examination.

Today’s session will see participants learning about roller-bandages and triangle cloths, cervical collars, scalp and jaw bandages, arm and elevation slings as well as demonstrations on collars, cuffs, proper lifting techniques and immobilisation.

The day will conclude with several demonstrations and another practical and theory exam.

Tommorow, as the final day of the course, will see participants sitting for both their practical and written exams to mark the completion of the three-day course.
