IN REFERENCE to the letter “Police urged to cut road mayhem?” by “D.A.” in the opinion column of Borneo Bulletin dated November 4, 2009, the Royal Brunei Police Force acknowledged the concerns expressed by the writer on the awareness of road safety in our abode of peace.
Since the beginning of this year, the number of road accidents had attracted the attention of the Royal Brunei Police Force. With the recent statistics, it shows an alarming number of road accidents especially involving fatalities, which became a major concern to the Royal Brunei Police Force.
However, the Royal Brunei Police Force through Traffic Control and Investigation Department together with the National Road Safety Council and other enforcement agencies has put up measures to curb road offenders by conducting roadblocks, speed traps, spot checks and issuing summons to road violators on the spot.
These actions have been continuously conducted from time to time. Such measures have also been coordinated and integrated to most police stations throughout the country.
Besides taking up actions laid out in the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68, the Royal Brunei Police Force will continue to educate the public on road safety through mass media, exhibitions as well police talks.
Engaging the community is also part of the Royal Brunei Police Force measures to tackle safety and security problems of the local community. The Neighbourhood Watch Scheme (Pengawasan Kejiranan Kampong) involved joint action — by the grassroots committee, residents, the Police, as well as other relevant government agencies.
With the collaboration and interaction with the community, thus, enabling the Police Force to better prevent and deter crime.
However, in any circumstances, it is impossible for the police to man a 24 hours patrol or doing round checks in any particular area. Police patrols or police beat duties will he done periodically and continuously from time to time. Police duties and responsibilities vary, and every duties and responsibilities are treated with priority.
The Royal Brunei Police Force will continue to innovate and review our policing to tackle new threats and emerging challenges.
In light of this situation, we welcome members of the public to come forward with information not only on traffic violators, but any information pertaining to crime offences and to call us at 2459500 ext 245/163/352 or email us at pro@police.gov.bn. The sense of ownership by the community is often the most crucial element in keeping our homes safe.
