The team made up of Seruji Setia, Pg Adam Hattan, Sarjik Mokhtar and Dennis Koh accumulated a total three-round score of 703 to win the Team Gross final.
Australia’s Skippy the Kangaroo finished second with 709 while the Revellers Australia finished third on 712.
A total of 32 teams made the cut to the final round after a series of six qualifying rounds held over six venues throughout Malaysia.
The Bruneians had a good outing in Johor, playing solid golf at the Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort.
“It was a very good tournament for us. We worked together as a team and that helped us win the competition,” said Seruji in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
“It was down to the last day when the weather was very bad. It was a wet day. We had to play for nine hours on the golf course to complete 18 holes, but somehow we still managed to win it,” added Seruji.
“I’m proud of the result as this is the first time a Brunei team have won in the gross event. Australia had monopolised the event for the past seven years.”
Seruji was also named the best individual golfer of the tournament.
The Brunei team had qualified for the final round after emerging champions at the qualifying event in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, where Seruji was also chosen the best individual golfer.
Some 136 teams took part in the 16th edition of the championship, organised by Tourism Malaysia with the cooperation of the Malaysian Golf Association.
Golfers from 14 countries including Malaysia took part in the tournament held over a period of seven months starting in March.
