Employment Order 2009: Ensures employee’s welfare

With the current changes and development, Labour issue is becoming increasingly challenging and complex that it is now becoming the focus worldwide. It is also the centre of discussion of both regional and international associations such as ASEAN, International Labour Organisation-ILO and the United Nations. The matter was highlighted by the Home Affairs Minister while launching Employment Order 2009 roadshow.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Adanan said the Labour Department with the cooperation of the Attorney General Office has reveiwed the Labour Act 1955. They study found that it is not suitable and relevant with the current development and situation. Therefore, the Employment Order 2009 is introduced. The new order set the minimum jobs requirement that must be fullfilled. It also encourage employer to be more generous in ensuring the employee’s welfare. This, he said, helps in encouraging workers to be loyal to their employers and avoid job hopping. Practising good labour practises will reduced turnover of workers especially locals.

With its enforcement, the Labour Act 1955 is now void. The order aims to enhanced the welfare, security and protection rights of workers based on the best practises and taking into account the standard of International Labour Association. It also aims to promote a more harmonious and condusive working environment in the country. Around 4-hundred people attended the ceremony which was held at a hotel in Kiulap.
