CRIME levels tend to rise as society becomes more affluent due to the pressures that come from the increase in wealth, the general manager of the biggest security service provider in Brunei told The Brunei Times yesterday.
Ambrose Nathan of G4S Security Services Sdn Bhd explained that there is a tendency for crime, particularly theft, to develop as people become more well-off and possess more assets of value. As a developing nation heading towards a vision of highly-skilled and successful people, it was likely that the Sultanate was also bound to fall prey to this trend.
“This is the trend everywhere. It’s expected to happen here as we become more affluent,” he said.
When asked what role G4S will play as crime increases, Nathan said: “We are the preventative measure. We like to think that we act as the eyes for the police.”
The general manager highlighted that today’s valuables were no longer limited to simply monetary assets and precious items such as jewellery.
“Brunei is usually perceived to be a safe place, but the people here are still conscious about (the need) for security,” he said.
Starting with 80 staff and six vehicles a decade ago, G4S in Brunei today has about 550 staff and 35 patrol vehicles, said the general manager.
It has also capitalised on the advancements made in modern technology by introducing new forms of security services such as remote surveillance.
With offices from Kuala Belait to Mentiri and round-the-clock protection, G4S has found it difficult to gather the company’s staff to revel in its own success.
However, 200 of the security providers’ staff and their family members managed to take part in the company’s Family Day yesterday at Muara Beach.
G4S staff and family were treated to a day of activities, such as aerobics, party bouncers for the kids.
The family day was also held to mark G4S’s 10th anniversary.
