In Brunei Darussalam, cardiovascular diseases are the leading medical problem. Amongst all the heart diseases, coronary artery disease that leads to a heart attack is the most common. In 2008, heart disease accounted for nineteen point three percent of the total deaths in Brunei Darussalam. The Minister of Health said to provide tertiary cardiac care in Brunei, a joint venture partnership between the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Parkway Health was established in August 2002. Prior to 2003, all patients who needed tertiary cardiac care including coronary angiography, electrophysiological study and heart surgery needed to go overseas. Since the partnership was inked, this is no longer necessary. Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Suyoi said these matters at the 2nd International Cardiac Conference Brunei Darussalam 2009 in the afternoon.
Yang Berhormat Pehin said that first coronary angiogram in Brunei was performed on 21st February 2003 and the first heart surgery in Brunei on 10th May 2003. Since then, more than 3 thousand six hundred and six angiograms, one thousand 7 hundred and 76 angioplasties and 8 hundred and eight heart surgeries were done in Gleaneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre, J-P-M-C up to September 2009. Yang Berhormat Pehin added communities need to pay more attention to their hearts and to have regular check-up and maintain a consistent regime of exercise. The cost of clinical care during and after an acute heart attack is increasing rapidly and the number of patients with the heart failure after heart attack is also escalating in the past two decades.
The conference was packed with 13 clinical speakers , covering all aspects of cardiac issues, from the time one is born in the form of congenital diseases to the time when one faces a failing heart, as in looking at the possibilities of mechanical support for it. The conference was organised by Gleneagles J-P-M-C.
