THE SMS Brunei Prihatin Orphans’ Fund received B$173,778 in donations from local benefactors yesterday, during an official handing-over ceremony held at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
On hand to receive the cheques on behalf of the fund was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Awg Hj Ahmad bin Hj Jumat. The donations were made from August 26 till October 13.
Since the launch of the campaign in August, members of the public have been able to send SMS for a good cause. To donate, all they needed to do was text “YATIM” followed by the amount they wished to donate.
The SMS Brunei Prihatin project is co-organised by the Community Development Department (JAPEM), B-Mobile Communications Sdn Bhd, DST Group and Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB). The project amassed over B$150,000 in donations in the first year of its launch in 2005.
Four years on, the annual project continues to be a success, with service providers DST Group and B.Mobile Communications Sdn Bhd collecting B$98,820 and B$78,958, respectively, from members of the public through SMS.
Giant Hypermart also played their part in the charitable campaign with their donation of B$11,560.61.
