Brunei Darussalam will celebrate Hari Raya Aidil Adha or Eid al-Adha on Saturday. The sunat hari raya aidil adha prayers will be held at all mosques and prayer halls throughout the country with the main focus at the Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah in Kampung Kiarong. Eid al-Adha is one of the important Islamic days celebrated by muslims around the world and is celebrated each year from the tenth until the thirteenth of the Islamic month of Zulhijjah.
Beginning with the Eid al-Adha Takbir on the night of 10th Zulhijjah, followed by the sunat Eid al-Adha prayers and Eid al-Adha sermon the next morning, the celebration continues with the qurban or feast of sacrifice which will be held until the 13th of Zulhijjah.
Eid al-Adha is a special celebration as it is the day that the muslim ummah recalls the story of Prophet Ibrahim Alaihi Salam’s sacrifice in fulfilling command of Allah the Al-Mighty and the willingness of his son, Prophet Ismail, in fulfilling Allah the Al-Mighty’s commands. According to a religious officer at the Islamic Dakwah Centre, Awang Haji Noralizam bin Hj Aliakbar, the Feast-of-Sacrifice was mentioned in the Quran when Prophet Ibrahim Alaihis Salam was ordered by Allah the Al-Mighty to carry out sacrificial rites on his son, Prophet Ismail who’s also the only child of Prophet Ibrahim.
The Feast of Sacrifice acts as a barrier to the fires of hell as in the sabda of the Prophet Muhammad Salallahu Alahi Wassalam that says, one who performs the act of qurban with sincere intentions, the act of qurban itself will become a barrier to the fires of hell. The giving of the sacrificial meat will clearly bring joy to the recipients, whether in the form of gifts for the rich or alms for the poor and destitute. This is the speciality of the act of qurban that the gifts from Allah the al-Mighty can be shared amongst all.
Eid al-Adha is also known as hari raya haji as it was commanded that during this glorious month, muslims that have the means perform the Haj at Baitullah al-Haram. The benefits received by those that had the opportunity to perform the Haj are large, among them, god willing, the forging of feelings of unity among muslims around the world, instilling the feeling of equality, educating the physical and spiritual self to be more patient in facing challenges.
The celebratory atmosphere during Eid al-Adha witnesses an awareness or realisation among muslims to uphold the harmony and prosperity of the ummah worldwide.
