BRUNEI Darussalam’s cueists Ahmad Taufiq and Ak Mohd Saiful Azri bin Pg Roslee took a clean sweep of the 9-ball doubles event by winning all their matches at the 3rd Borneo Games yesterday.
The duo first tore apart Sarawak in their first match with a 9-3 score in the morning and then in the afternoon, they held on to their nerves to defeat archrival Sabah’s duo of Larry Hiew and Nealson Low in a nail-biting encounter winning 9-5 in the race to 9 frames.
Although it’s not official yet until the prize presentation which will be held on Dec 4, it’s the first gold medal for Brunei in the 3rd Borneo Games.
Coach Lim Tat Hwe in an interview after the game said: “Although it’s not official yet, I am ecstatic, we won. I just hope that both Ahmad Taufiq and Ak Mohd Saiful Azri can carry the momentum into tomorrow’s games in the singles event.”
“The players’ determination and hunger for gold medals are the keys to their success. Sabah are tough opponents and we managed to overcome them,” Lim said.
“The key moment that turned around for Brunei against Sabah was when Ak Mohd Saiful Azri did a break clear which shifted the momentum to our side. ”
“I hope that our cueists will again play a perfect game in the singles event tomorrow,” Lim added.
The singles event will kick start today at 9am at the Cue Sports Venue of Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
