BRUNEI Darussalam won another three silver and five bronze medals in athletics yesterday to conclude the competition with a total of one gold, three silver and 11 bronze medals.
Three national records were shattered in the men and women hammer’s throw and also the women’s triple jump yesterday.
Brunei’s silver medals came from the women’s triple jump, the men’s 4x100m and the men’s hammer throw.
The first silver of the day for Brunei came from Nuramalina binti Bakir who leapt a distance of 10.58m in the women’s triple jump for a new national record. The gold medal went to Laura Huang of Sarawak (10.60m) and Nor Anisa Aryani also from Sarawak (10.23m) took the bronze.
Brunei’s second silver was from the men’s hammer throw where Md Hadi Ezlan bin Abdull Sebad threw a distance of 42.32m to captured second place and also shattered the old national record.
The gold medal went to Jackie Wong Siew Cheer of Sarawak (49.66m) and his compatriot Yek Chu Hao took the bronze (41.88m).
The Brunei’s 4x100m relay team of Azrol Putra, Md Abd Hafiz, Md Haziq, Md Faisal and Md Haizul Rani won the silver medal with a time of 42.89sec. The gold medal went to Sabah (42.61s) and third place went to Sarawak (43.47s).
Meanwhile, Michelle Charlene Basir added Brunei’s bronze tally with a fine effort of 28.10m in the women’s hammer throw to set a new national record. The gold medal and silver medal went to Sarawak’s Casier Renee Kelly Lee and Tiong Mee Yien respectively.
Awang Hashady Anak Jarah proved that he is one of Brunei’s top middle distance runners when he won the bronze medal in the 1,500m with a time of 4:21.03sec. The gold medal went to Parameswaran A/L Selvarajoo of Malacca (4:18.68) and Sabah’s Mohd Auf Afibukhari took the silver with a time of 4:20.85.
Dayang Maziah binti Mahusin won Brunei’s third bronze of the day when she finished the 400m hurdles race in 1:14.75sec. The gold medal went to Emmy Ahkim of Sabah with a time of 1:09.06 and Sarawak’s Doreena Francis took the silver (1:12.41).
In the men’s 200m, Md Faisal bin Ahad was 0.05 second ahead of Sabah’s Mohd Agustinus to snatch the bronze medal for Brunei. Sarawak’s Ambrose Jilom won the gold with a time of 22.35sec and the silver medal went to East Kalimantan’s Rengki (22.72s).
The final bronze for Brunei came from the 400m where Md Haizul Rani Metussin and Sarawak’s Alexander Goverthan finished with the same time of 51.09 to share third place. The gold and silver went to Sabah’s Mohd Yunus Lasaleh and Nordye Anik respectively.
Brunei head coach of athletics, Mohamad Shahjohan bin Hj Sahri said after the prize presentation: “I am proud that my athletes broke three national records today. Although many of the athletes didn’t win any medals, I know that they have already achieved their target in the two days of competition. I am proud of all my athletes.”
