BRUNEI Darussalam’s lawn bowlers have done their country proud with an impressive showing at the 3rd Borneo Games by winning three gold, three silver and one bronze medals following four days of competition.
The surprise package was the last final whereby Brunei Men’s Triple team of Bahren bin Hj Rahman, Firdaud and Yakub bin Hj Abd Hamid pipped Sarawak’s team of Mazali bin Sabli, Rosman bin Majunit and Yusuf bin Aminuddin 16 —14 after both sides were level at 14 points for the gold medal.
Brunei’s next gold came from the Women’s Four where the combination Dayang Shanduwani binti Aman, Rosita Hj Mohd Khamis, Dayang Esmawandy binti Brahim/ Ibrahim and Dayang Siti Ervi Fedrussanti binti Umar proved too strong for Sarawak winning 21-9 in the final.
Brunei’s third gold came from the women’s triple comprising Dayang Esmawandy binti Brahim/Ibrahim, Dk Nurul Nabillah binti Pg Salleh Chuchu and Siti Ervi Fedrussanti binti Umar after beating Sabah on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, two of the three silver medals came from both the men’s singles and women’s singles events.
In the men’s singles final, Brunei’s Hj Norhadi lost to Sarawak’s Muhd Akbar bin Busman 21-12 while in the women’s singles final, Brunei’s Dk. Nurul Nabillah went down narrowly to Sarawak’s Alfiza binti Abdullah 21-19 in a keenly-contested match.
Brunei’s third silver was from the men’s pair of Hj Mat Rasli and Mohd Israt Amiruddin on Tuesday.
The only bronze for Brunei came from the men’s four where Awang Subohidin bin Awang Mohamed, Buang bin Asin, Sodami bin Chil and Abdullah bin Sani defeated Sabah with just one point at 12-11 to snatch third place. Assistant coach Abdul Rahman bin Hj Omar was happy with his team’s achievements.
“This year we got three gold, three silver and one bronze. It has already surpassed our medal tally in the last Borneo Games of one gold, one silver and one bronze. I am satisfied and proud of the team, they have done well in this competition,” he said.
One of the matches to remember, he said was the men’s triple final.
“It’s one of the most exciting games that I’ve ever seen where they were able to hold their nerves and carved out a win for Brunei after both teams were level and have to play sudden death.”
