Brunei Gasing team rule

BRUNEI’S Gasing (top spinning) team wrapped up their campaign of the 3rd Borneo Games by snatching two gold and one silver medal in the three-day round-robin competition at the new Gasing venue.

Brunei’s Gasing pair of Awang Sapar bin Hj Rashid and Awang Mohamad Ali bin Hj Latip steamrolled their way to the gold medal with a perfect record of three wins out of three matches.

The duo defeated Sabah in a tiebreak when both sides drew 4-4 on Wednesday while earlier in the competition, Brunei had defeated Labuan 8-2 and Sarawak 10-3.

The silver medal went to Sarawak and Sabah took the bronze.

In the final game of the singles event, Awang Asni bin Hj Adnan kept his undefeated record of three wins against Labuan to grab the gold medal.

In the last match-up of the event, Awang Asni was able to come up strong in the tiebreak when both sides were tied at 0-0 to maintain his undefeated record. In other wins, Awang Asni beat Sabah 1-0 and then Sarawak 5-1.

The silver medal went to Sarawak and Labuan took the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Brunei Gasing team of Awang Haji Nayan bin Hj Sisa, Awang Kamis bin Hj Hashim, Awang Mohd Jarin bin Hj Rungging, Awang Misir bin Hj Berudin and Awang Jasni bin Hj Ompak won the silver after beating Labuan 8-0.

The gold medal went to Sabah who were undefeated with nine points and the bronze medal to Sarawak with three points.

Awang Zanidi bin Hj Saban, the coach of the team in an interview said: “I’m proud that my athletes performed up to their par and took two gold for Brunei. We have surpassed our last achievement of one gold and one silver medal in the 2nd Borneo Games.”

” The success came from the athletes’ determination and hard work,” he added

Present to give away the medals was Pg Haji Bahrom bin Pg Haji Bahar, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
