ONE of the projects managed by the Volunteer Unit of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation is a programme to help improve the socio-economic development towards poverty eradication (PBSE) to assist needy families.
Yesterday, a signing ceremony was held for three recipients to receive aid in the Penambang Project, one participant received the individual aid project and 10 participants received certificates in the sewing and embroidery course while 11 received certificates in the advanced computer course.
The guest of honour was Dato Paduka Haji Ali Hashim bin Haji Daud, Managing Director of the Foundation.
In his speech, the chairman of the event said the assistance that has been introduced and maintained under the project helps improve the socio-economic development towards poverty eradication (PBSE).
“It is one among the four major projects implemented through the volunteer unit with support from the foundation and encouragement from the board of directors of the committee,” he said.
“The foundation hopes all the help and any facilities provided will be fully utilised by the recipients. Hopefully, it will help ease the burden of less fortunate families. Apart from that, it can also indirectly inject enthusiasm and confidence in working to improve their lives towards the better.”
Kampong Bolkiah ‘A’ and ‘B’ have been selected as venues for the case studies and pilot projects as a result of information obtained from a survey in June 2006 and May 2008 where it was reported that both villages have the highest level of poverty. However, these projects will also be implemented in other villages and districts in the country. A total of four persons received assistance in the form of a boat equipped with a new engine, anti-fire equipment and safety jackets.
The 11 recipients comprising youths were provided with basic and advanced computer courses to expose them to the world of IT. Assistance was also given to the group of women with sewing and cooking skills.
