Continuing the fight to raise awareness on cancer

Edwin Eng Dec 5th, 2009

IN an effort to increase the awareness of breast cancer, the Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) has recently joined hands with the Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group to raise awareness with the old saying – ‘Early detection saves lives’.

JPMC collaboration with the Breast Cancer Support Group has successfully raised some donation in the span of three weeks.

A cheque presentation was held yesterday at JPMC at the main boardroom in the centre and present to hand over the donation was JPMC General Manager, Mr Tan Seang Teak along with several senior management staffs of JPMC to the newly appointed Chairperson of Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group, Ms Masjuwita Haji Ab Hamid.

The collaboration was made possible with the sale of mammography screening vouchers during the Women’s Health Day event that was held on October 13 at Brunei Shell Petroleum Headquarters and JPMC’s Department of Diagnostic Imaging in the month of October.

Ms Masjuwita herself is a survivor of a very rare form of breast cancer, and the first of its kind encountered in Brunei.

Along with her experience, she has been actively involved with the group’s activities in educating and sharing her fight with cancer, which has inspired many women.

One of her major achievements was when she was invited to participate in the ‘Wall of Hope’ project by the National Cancer Centre in Bukit Panjang Government High School in Singapore, last May 30.

She was the only Bruneian involved in the project and was proud to see her ’tile’ embedded on the ‘Wall of Hope’. As the Chairperson of Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group, Ms Masjuwita has the vision to bring the group forward and to raise awareness by educating the general public more on the disease. The Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group currently has about 70 members and is planning to do a ward visit to cancer patients who are undergoing cancer treatment and chemotherapy.

In presenting the cheque, Mr Tan said that, “At JPMC we always look forward to working with various societies and organisations to contribute to the healthcare of the Brunei Community”.

He further added that, “We always strive to provide the best healthcare services, serving the patients and their family’s health needs”.

Mr Tan also expressed his appreciation to the patients who supported the donation by purchasing the mammography screening vouchers for their loved ones.
