A FORTY- seven year old Indonesian man was sentenced to nine months imprisonment and three strokes of the cane after pleading guilty for overstaying in Brunei for 2723 days unlawfully before the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate’s Court recently.
Supriyadi, who like many Indonesians goes by just one name, was arrested at a rented house in Jalan
The Immigration Prosecuting Officer said the defendant failed to produce any valid travel document when asked by the Immigration personnel.
Investigation revealed that the defendant first came to the country nine years ago to work for a company as a labourer.
However, on June 14, 2002, his employer had lodged a report to the Sengkurong Police Station and to the Immigration Department on June 19, 2002 that he had ran away.
The defendant admitted that he ran away from his employer sometime in March 2002 and had been working as a freelancer at various places since then.
