A TOTAL of 39 atheletes from Brunei left the country yesterday for Laos to participate in the 25th Sea Games in Vientiane, Laos.

The games will be held from December 9 till 18.
Present to bid farewell to the Brunei contingent at the Brunei International Airport was Dato Paduka Haji Jemat bin Haji Ampal, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports and Haji Mohamad bin Panglima Asgar Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah, the Youth and Sports Director.
The Brunei contingent was led by Haji Mohd Zamri bin Dato Paduka Haji Hamdani, Deputy Director II at the Youth and Sports Department who is also the Brunei contingent Chef De Mission to the 25th Sea Games in Laos.
The Brunei contingent is expected to be back in the country on December 21.
Brunei will be participating in seven sporting events including billiards and snooker, athletics, karatedo, pencak silat, sepak takraw, taekwando and wushu.
When asked if the Brunei pencak silat contenders, nine in all, can grab at least a medal in this year’s event, manager Pg Hj Jufry bin Pg Hj Jaludin said they will do their best to earn an honour for the country.
“Brunei is sending six male and two female contenders for this meet and I hope they will try their best to make the country proud by winning medals. After two years- of training and preparations including joining the Asia Indoor Sports in November this year, I think we can achieve something,” said the pencak silat manager yesterday.
The Brunei pencak silat contenders will participate in the men’s singles, women’s singles, categories A, B, D, E and G.
In the last meet in Thailand in 2007, Brunei managed to win one gold, one silver and four bronze.
Brunei’s largest contingent ever to participate in the meet was in the 1999 SEA Games in Bandar Seri Begawan where 479 athletes took part which. saw Brunei winning 4 gold, 12 silver and 32 bronze medals.
