Call to join fight against corruption

CORRUPTION cases recorded in November 2009 alone stand at 29, bringing the total figure to 321 for the first 11 months of this year.

The Acting Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Awg Hj Abd Raub Hj Mohd Yassin yesterday called upon members of the public to join the fight against corruption by providing relevant information to the bureau. He highlighted this during his speech at the World Anti-Corruption Day celebration held at Dewan Serbaguna Kompleks Utama Bumiputera in Temburong.

In attendance were the Temburong District Officer, Awang Matussin bin Orang Kaya Sura Haji Tuba, as well as representatives of the heads of departments.

It is part of the Anti Corruption Bureau’s activities to raise awareness and understanding on corruption in conjunction with the International Anti Corruption Day and a briefing session entitled Bila Hadiah Menjadi Rasuah’.

Awg Hj Raub also revealed ‘one of the biggest achievements by the bureau, which was their participation in the global effort to prevent and combat corruption by joining 140 other countries to sign the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), which was opened for signing on December 9, 2003 and implemented since December 14 , 2005.

“The Anti-Corruption Bureau has conducted several initiatives which includes anti-corruption education, which is still ongoing in schools and higher institutions in the country. Through this initiative, Brunei has shown commitment towards the efforts to fight corruption as highlighted by the convention,” he said in his speech.
The Penghulu of Mukim Bangar, Awg Hamdan Hj Awg Besar also spoke to the Bulletin, revealing the zero number of corruption cases, and also stressed the fact that corruption is wrong in so many ways including religion, as well as the laws.

The next and final session will be held in the Tutong District at the Dewan Serbaguna Serambangun, Daerah Tutong.
