THE Belait District Officer, Hj Jamain bin Momin, officiated the opening of Mukim Seria’s ‘Tamuneka Sungai Bera’ dry and wet market at the New Village Seria, yesterday afternoon, to provide opportunity for growers to sell their products for additional income.
The opening of farmer’s market in New Village Seria also coincided with the launching of a signboard, followed by a cleaning campaign held within the area.
The district officer in his welcoming remarks said the opening of the new market will control business and trade activities as required under the Rampaian business license acts and regulations, so businesses are more organised.
The new market began construction sometime in 2008 and was completed this year. The total cost of the project was around $30,000.
There are 77 allocated stalls for vendors and ten of the stalls are built with rooftops. From the total number of stalls, eight are allocated for the sale of food and delicacies, while 57 stalls are for vegetable farmers, with the remaining stalls available for fishmongers and chicken farmers.
“We need more markets that are organised solely for the purpose of supporting local farmers and the opening of this facility would meet the demand for locally produced food in the district,” said one of the vendors.
The opening of the new market will allow consumers to have access to locally grown, farm fresh produce as well as cater to a growing consumer base interested in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm.
