THE role of photography in life is obviously important. Aside from being mediums of communication, pictures also possess the elements of education, knowledge, reference, evidence and so on. They also serve to conserve and maintain the heritage that is reflected with various meanings depending on each person’s observation. In other words, a picture can tell a story of a thousands word in any language to give a deep impact.
This was stated yesterday by Dr Mohd Hadi bin Mohd Malayong, the Director of the Information Department, who was guest of honour at the 32′ Brunei Photographic Society (BPS) Bi-Annual Meeting held at the conference hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.
“In the era of globalisation today, members of the association need to always upgrade their skills and knowledge in the field of photography because of the fast pace development of technology,” Dr Mohd Hadi told those present at the meeting.
“Therefore, to preserve the quality and art of photography that has been produced, it is wise for all members of the association to have an open mind with new knowledge without having to ruin the ethical aspects and originality of the photographs. Members should always be aware of the new development to maintain the survival of photography in line with the daily lives of the community.
“In Brunei Darussalam, photographers, especially members of the association are reminded to always carry on the good reputation of the association and the image of photographers in the country who are known for their courtesy and for following proper customs and protocol especially when taking pictures in official events or ceremonies,” added the Director of Information.
The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a certificate to Hj Jumat bin Hj Taha, the incoming Advisor to the BPS who has held several executive posts in the society —including the vice-presidency — for many years. Certificates were also presented to the members of the society’s executive working committee for 2008-2009.
The function also saw the trophy presentation for “Best Photographer of the Year 2009″ by the guest of honour to Joseph Wong Siew Hang, the winner of a year-long competition organised by the society.
