WITH only a day left before we usher in the new year, parents and guardians have been especially busy preparing for the upcoming school term.
Crowded bookstores are a common sight during this holiday season as parents rush to purchase school necessities for their children before school reopens on January 4, 2010. Some shops are facing book shortages due to the high demand but have since placed orders.
During an interview with the Bulletin, Mohammed Nizar Ali Yusuf, a salesman at Basmi Book Store, said, “Every year, we have to order from the Curriculum at the Ministry of Education while we import others from Singapore to meet the demand.”
One of the parents at a local bookstore also shared her thoughts on the issue. She said, “I have not bought the complete set of books needed as some are still out of stock and I have to wait for the next supply.
“Money wise, of course every parent needs to make sacrifices. If I were to calculate the expenditure for my children’s school necessities, it would reach $1,000. That doesn’t even include school fees and other payments required.
” However, it is a sacrifice we must make to educate our children to ensure their success in the future.”
