Sepak takraw: 23 teams for President Cup

SEPAK TAKRAW enthusiasts will be treated to a sumptuous feast with a total of 23 teams fighting it out for top honours at the inaugural President Cup Open Sepak Takraw Championship.

Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Sepak Takraw Referees Association (Pepesta), the tournament will start on Jan 8 at the Sungai Kebun Sports Complex in Lumapas.

“We are very satisfied with the number of teams that have registered for the tournament,” said Nordin Hj Abd Rahman, an official of Pepesta, in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

Nordin revealed that the teams had been separated into two groups with 11 teams making up Group A while Group B have 12 teams.

Only the regu (triples) category will be contested in the tournament.

The Royal Brunei Land Force (TDDB) have entered five teams in the competition while Bipa registered four teams.

Sengkurong will feature three teams while the National Schools Sports Council (MSSBD), Naga Sumur and Beseta will each send two teams to compete.

Other teams that have registered for the tournament include the Department of Youth and Sports Scheme (JBS), TDS and Limau Manis.

The aim of the tournament is to improve the quality of sepak takraw in the country and to scout for players to represent the country in the future. The opening ceremony will be held at 9am.The Brunei Times
