A total of 563 new students yesterday enrolled at Tanjong Maya Secondary School, among them 160 Year 7 students.

In his opening remarks, Principal Aliuddin bin Hj Abd Rahman said, “This year will be the first in which MA 5 students will be able to sit for the GCE ‘O’ Level at the school. Towards this, the school is providing various programmes and preparations for students before they face their examinations. One such programme is the Diagnostic Test (DT) and Early Intervention Programme (EIP).
“The first DT will be held on January 13 and 14 for students who failed their PSR examination. If they pass later, they will be channeled to Year 7E (Ordinary Level).
“The DT will also include students who scored a grade ‘D’ in Malay, English, Mathematics and Science subject. The DT result will become the measure for teachers to coordinate the EIP in assisting weak students in specific subjects.
“Aside from academic programmes, this year the school also emphasises on character building programmes for students. Part of the programme includes cleaning the Tanjong Maya Mosque, Laila paddy planting, decorating the school and it surroundings, students skill workshops, motivational and religious talks, and career exhibitions,” he added.
The day also saw a SPN21 briefing and talks delivered by the Examination Department, HEP Section, School Discipline Section, Counselling Section, as well as Transportation Scholarship Section.
