TEGUCIGALPA, Jan 23 (NNN-Prensa Latina): A report on the situation in Honduras released Friday has revealed many cases of murder, torture, illegal arrests and repression committed by the de facto regime since the coup of June 28.
“Because of the disproportionate use of force by security forces to suppress demonstrations, the deaths of at least seven people,” says the document from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
The IACHR expresses its concern at the lack of progress in investigations to identify and punish the perpetrators of these crimes.
The coup regime and the Supreme Court consistently deny the existence of violations, which results in a situation of inaction and tolerance that facilitates the repetition of these acts with impunity, the commission notes.
The article, entitled Honduras: Human Rights and coup condemned the arbitrary declaration of emergency rule, the criminalization of social protest and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of protesters.
In its conclusions, the IACHR stated that the attacks had a greater impact on women, who were often subjected to sexual violence.
Similarly, other groups like the Garifuna, homosexuals and foreigners were victims of discriminatory practices.
These are humanitarian violations following the interruption of constitutional order, the report says, and warns that the return of institutionalism is necessary for the protection and guarantees respect for all people in this country.
Nearly seven months ago hooded soldiers in collusion with the oligarchy, President Manuel Zelaya abducted and forcibly took him to Costa Rica.
After two unsuccessful attempts to return home, Zelaya managed to return on September 21 and since then been held in the Brazilian embassy.
