BAGHDAD, Jan 27 (NNN-KUNA) — Iranian forces pulled out completely from the Iraqi Fakka oil field area at dawn Wednesday and returned to their original positions behind the border line.
Government spokesman Ali Al-Dabbagh said the Iranians cleared the area of the fourth well and returned to their original posts before crossing the line.
A security source confirmed completion of the pullout to KUNA and said the Iranians filled up the trenches dug during the dispute.
The source added bulldozers also removed a sand barrier built near the well last month.
Iranian forces entered the Fakka oil field area last month and hoisted the Iranian flag, stirring a political crisis with Iraq. The situation was quickly contained through a visit by the Iranian foreign minister to Baghdad where he pledged a pullout of the area.
The oil field lies in the Maysan Governorate close to the Iraq-Iran borders and had been drilled in the 1970s, but operation was suspended since the Iraq-Iran war.
