THE Deputy Minister of National Defence of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam yesterday paid a working visit to the Bolkiah Garrison of Ministry of Defence (MinDef), a statement issued by Mindef announced yesterday.

At the garrison, Lt Gen Nguyen Chi Vinh and his delegation made a courtesy call to Mindef Deputy Minister Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Paduka Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar at the Tower Block.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to and exchanged ideas for further strengthening bilateral defence relations.

Pehin Datu Hj Mohammad Yasmin also expressed his support to Vietnam throughout its chairmanship of the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) in 2010, the statement added.

Also present during the visit was the ministry’s Permanent Secretary II Dato Paduka Hj Abd Majid Mangarshah and Vietnam’s Ambassador to Brunei Pham Binh Man.

Lt Gen Nguyen and the delegation were briefed on the organisation and structure of Mindef and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces as were given presentations on Brunei’s Defence White Paper.

Bilateral defence cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Vietnam received a boost with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation in 2005, the statement from Mindef said.

The statement from Mindef added that the three-day visit by Lt Gen Nguyen aims to foster closer bilateral relations and explore areas of cooperation between Brunei and Vietnam, particularly in the field of defence.
