KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Time Engineering Bhd (TEB), a Malaysian government-linked company involved in information and communication technology (ICT) has signed an agreement with Datacom Co. Ltd of Laos to provide data security for the Central Bank of Laos.
The agreement was signed in Vientiane recently by TEB Chief Executive Officer Steven Lim Kee Seng and his Datacom counterpart, Thanongsinh Kanlagna.
“This is our first venture into Laos. This co-operation will definitely be beneficial not only to TEB but also Datacom, in terms of business. There would also be a transfer of technology to financial institutions in Laos on data security,” Lim told Bernama.
“E-commerce is becoming increasingly important in this part of the world and it needs to be secure. This is where we intend to play a pivotal role, having both the experience and expertise in this area, and leveraging on it.”
He said the signing of the agreement would also make the Central Bank of Laos one of the first national banks in the Indochina region to embrace data security. Apart from providing data security for the central bank, TEB will also train Datacom staff on data security.
Two Datacom staff would be based in Malaysia for a six-month period to be trained on the data security system being offered by TEB.
“This a pilot project. It is just the start of something new for Laos. There is a lot of scope for it to be explored in terms of business ventures,” Lim explained.
Thanongsinh said the agreement would enable Laos to train its citizens not only on data security but also various other ICT applications.
“ICT is important for all segments of society as it is applicable in all sectors. We are seeing a boom in the ICT sector and welcome TEB’s efforts to tap into it. TEB has made an intelligent decision by teaming-up with Datacom and the Laos market is one waiting to be tapped,” said Thanongsinh, who is also the head of the Laos ICT Commerce Association.
