THE search for the female Red Bull Driver in Brunei gives an opportunity to more women with the drive and potential to enter the motorsport scene.
Two female drivers from Brunei will get a chance of a lifetime to be part of Red Bull Racing Team to compete in the Sepang 1000km race.
The Red Bull Rookies team was formed in 2008 based on the Red Bull Female Driver Search in 2007, conducted in Klang Valley, Malaysia. The programme aims to find, fund and nurture up-and-coming female drivers to form an all-female racing team.
The first batch of three drivers, with two Red Bull Rookies, took part in the Merdeka Millenium Endurance Race 2008.
This programme is a collaboration between Red Bull Malaysia and Asia Advanced Driving Academy (AADA) and the official Red Bull Malaysia Team Manager is the Chief Trainer of AADA, Kenvin Low.
Asked if the AADA is open to both females and males, he said “This is an opportunity to anyone interested and as long as they have a valid driving licence.”
“It is my job to train them, brief and go through some courses with them as well as it also requires physical and mental ability,” he added.
He will be guiding the new drivers to an advance driving course where drivers would undergo 15 three-hour sessions. The track and defensive driving course includes learning on the track, judgment, learning point, and braking point.
The Red Bull Female Driver Search 2008 winner, Puteri Ayu Jasmin, is the team leader and mentor to new rookie drivers. She advises drivers with a passion for motor sport to just give it a chance, without hesitation and not to worry.
“Do not waste this opportunity!” she added.
The goal of the Red Bull Driver Search is to encourage more women to delve into this male-dominated sport and prove that women can race men as equals on the racetrack.
The programme also involves assistance in the critical and essential racing-physical training, team dynamics, racing techniques and interpersonal skills.
Two new members were selected from participants of the previous Red Bull Female Driver Search: Carmen Lim and Lee Hui Jing. They were among 2500 young, female applicants who vied to join team Red Bull Rookies in 2009.
Both made it to top six positions. They underwent a gruelling selection process, including a Smart Women Driving Course and a three-day boot camp incorporating Advanced Driving Course (ADC)
Red Bull Female Driver Search Brunei was launched in January 2010. Candidates were invited to apply to the recruitment programme and they will be shortlisted for a practical test in February 2010.
One candidate will be chosen to join three Malaysian representatives to form the Red Bull Rookies team 2010.
