MOROCCAN KING SENDS CONDOLENCES ON DEATH OF ALGERIAN AMBASSADOR IN RABAT

ALGIERS, Jan 30 (NNN-MAP) — King Mohammed VI of morocco has sent a message of condolence to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on the death of of Algeria’s ambassador in Rabat, General Larbi Bekheir.

In this message, the sovereign said he had painfully learnt the sad news of the death of General Larbi Bekheir, adding that the passing on of the ambassador was a terrible loss for Algeria.

The King underlined that the late ambassador was one of the courageous Algerian high-ranking officers who had fully and honourably fulfilled their roles to secure freedom and independence for Algeria and build its modern state.

Morocco, he added, had lost a prominent ambassador, a dear brother and a faithful friend, while pointing out that the late ambassador had strong brotherly and friendly ties with the Kingdom of Morocco which he considered a second homeland.

The king recalled that the late ambassador endeavoured in a constructive way to foster bilateral relations of sincere brotherhood and good neighborliness within the framework of the Arab Maghreb Union.

“In these times of hardship and following this painful ordeal, we want to offer to your Excellency and the Algerian people, on behalf of Morocco, its King, government and people, our condolences and sincere compassion,” the king’s message said.

The king also instructed that a delegation of the government of Morocco be sent here to extend his condolences. The delegation, comprising the king’s advisers, Mohamed Moatassim and Zoulikha Nasri, and Foreign Minister Taieb Fassi Fihri, visited the house of the late ambassador to extend condolences of the King to the bereaved family.

SOUTH ASIA BIGGEST GAMES OPEN IN BANGLADESH

DHAKA, Jan 30 (NNN-BSS) — The 11th South Asian Games kicks off Friday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opening the greatest sporting extravaganza of the region releasing pigeons, the symbol of peace.

“The 11th South Asian Games is opened,” she said while colourful balloons swarmed the skyline of the Bangabandhu National Stadium in seconds to mark the announcement.

In brief inaugural comments, she said Bangladesh was proud to host the South Asia’s biggest sports event while she welcomed the players.

Bangladesh commandeered the South Asian Nation stage Friday celebrating its third-time role as host with a stunning display of pageantry and pyrotechnics to unrivaled in the games’ history at Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS).

The country welcomed scores of South Asian and Asian sports dignitaries to an opening ceremony watched by nearly 25,000 people at the eye-catching National Stadium and a potential audience of half a billion in the South Asia region. It was depicted as the largest, costliest extravaganza in SA Games history.

The parade of athletes concluded with the entry of the 453-strong Bangladesh team, led by flag-bearer former ace shooter, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Asif Hossain Khan.

The welcome – by a frenzied, chanting, flag-waving crowd – was thunderous while the premier in her brief speech said ” It is a great day in the history of Bangladesh as we all assemble here to inaugurate the 11th South Asian Games for the third time in Games history.

The opening of the 12-day event was preceded by hoisting of national flags of eight participating nations at the SAARC Fountain on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue at Karwan Bazaar.

As part of the ceremony the SA Games Torch went around the stadium as it was carried by 1971 Liberation War veterans and a number of sport stars and eventually installed on a makeshift stand by president of Bangladesh Football Federation Kazi Salahuddin.

Bangladesh is hosting the meet for the third time after staging it in 1985 and 1993 when the Games were formerly known as South Asian Federation (SAF) Games while the symbol of this year’s games is “Kutum” (relative).

The extravaganza is likely to be the largest sporting event in Bangladesh as well as South Asia, while it could only be eclipsed by the upcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi of India.

Bangladesh has enrolled a contingent of 453 members in the Games which is the highest. Surprisingly Nepal has inserted the second highest number of 430 participants ahead of
India who has included 423 in their contingent.

The number of Sri Lankan contingent is 419 while Pakistan contingent contains 388. Afghanistan has a contingent of 176 and the number of Maldives contingent is 155. Himalayan kingdom Bhutan has the lowest number of athletes in their contingent numbering only 67.

Nearly 1,800 athletes from eight countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – joined the games considered “South Asian Olympic” to compete in 23 disciplines, which offer 158 gold medals.

TARGET TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF TIGERS IN THE WORLD BY 2022

BANGKOK, Jan 30 (NNN-BSS) — The first Asia Ministerial Conference (AMC) on Tiger Conservation has decided to make efforts for doubling the number of tigers in the world by the year 2022.

A joint declaration of the conference held at Hua Hin, Thailand said Friday.

Ministers from 13 Tiger Range Countries (TRC) as well as 16 international donor agencies attended the conference. The countries are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam.

State minister for Environment and Forests Dr Hasan Mahmud led a five-member Bangladesh team in the conference.

The conference was followed by a two-day meeting of the senior officials of TRCs which discussed various matters related to the conservation of tigers and plans for doubling the number of tigers by the year 2022.

The ministers presented their country position on tiger conservation during the Conference.

Addressing the meeting Dr Hasan Mahmud said Bangladesh has around 450 Royal Bengal Tigers living in Sundarbans which is the highest density in a single landscape of the world.

He highlighted the initiatives taken by the Government of Bangladesh for tiger conservation and need for financial and technical support from the international agencies.

Dr Hasan said Bangladesh launched its eight-year Tiger Action Plan (BTAP) in 2009 for national wildlife conservation.

He sought international support for habitat development for tiger and capacity development for Forest Department, population assessment of tiger and its prey and mitigation of human-tiger conflict.

The major points covering the Hua Hin Declaration include landscape management, law enforcement and illegal trade on wildlife, effective monitoring of tiger status, mitigation of
human-tiger conflict and sustainable financing from the domestic as well as international agencies on tiger conservation.

The ministers acknowledged with appreciation and welcomed the invitation of the Russian Federation for the first Tiger Summit to be held in Vladivostok in September, 2010. — NNN-BSS

KENYA TO HOST NEXT CONTINENTAL INTERNET NAMES MEETING

NAIROBI, Jan 30 (NNN-KNA) — Kenya will host the next round of the African Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meetings to be held between March 7 and 12, 2010.

The meetings will be held under the auspice of the Kenya Network Information Centre (KENIC) at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre and some 1,500 delegates are expected to attend the meetings.

During the duration of the meetings, two million visitors are also expected to arrive in Kenya as tourists, thus boosting the economy of the country.

Within Africa, ICANN has held meetings in Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and South Africa. Other countries which submitted bids for the March 2010 meeting were Nigeria and Namibia.

The ICANN is a company responsible for co-ordinating the management of the technical elements of the Internet to ensure universal resolvability so that all users of the Internet can find all valid addresses.

It is also involved in awareness of management of cyber-security and crime, privacy, cyber squatting, intellectual property rights, electronic commerce and local or relevant content. It uses unique technical identifiers like .KE, UK, COM. and INFO.

The Kenya Internet community was born through a broad-based consultive process of the local Internet community with the aim of instituting a non-profit organization to operate and manage the Internet, resources allocation and registration services to assist in the development and growth of the Internet in Kenya.

The government of Kenya has donated 7.0 million shillings to support the conference.
Through the Ministry of Information and Communication, the government has also assured stakeholders in the industry that it will also continue to support such initiatives in order for the country to exploit opportunities in the Information Technology (ICT) sector.

“As a government, we have to employ mechanisms that will empower players in all sectors to maximize on opportunities available and continue creating both business and employment opportunities,” said the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication, Dr. Bitange Ndemo, who added that the conference would enable stakeholders to execute their individual potential in service delivery.

The Conference will also give the local Internet community an opportunity to influence policy decisions on Internet governance, capacity building, and benchmarking and share practices, create awareness on various Internet governance issues, empower them with management of cyber crime, intellectual property rights, electronic commerce and help place Kenya on the global Internet map. — NNN-KNA

BANGLADESH ‘ROAD SHOW’ TO ATTRACT FDI FOR 4,000MW POWER

DHAKA, Jan 30 (NNN-BSS) — A two-day ‘road show’ of Bangladesh for attracting the foreign direct investment (FDI) to the power and energy sector started at Marriott Marquise Hotel in New York Friday.

Bangladesh organized the show titled “Bangladesh Investment Conference and Road Show on Power and Energy Projects” for encouraging the participation of the private sector in the power and energy sector.

A total of 160 representatives from 78 organizations, including Morgan Stanley, Olstat, ARC, Caterpillar, Konco Philips, GoaldStar Energy and HSBC, are participating in the show, according to an official handout.

One-to-one meetings have been organized after the main presentation. This road show has been organized for attracting the FDI for setting up new power plants with the capacity of 4,000 megawatts (MWs) of electricity and constructing an LNG terminal.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Power Dr Toufiq-e-Elahi, Bir Bikram, was present at the function as the chief guest.

He said there are enormous investment potentials in Bangladesh.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Enamul Haque said Bangladesh has been maintaining economic stability for a last few years and it will be more dynamic in future.

KENYAN VEEP INAUGURATES BETTING CONTROL BOARD

NAIROBI, Jan 30 (NNN-KBC) — Kenyan Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the newly inaugurated Betting Control and Licensing Board to establish a national lottery which will generate income to support sporting and other development activities in the country.

The sporting fraternity was looking to the board to assist them financially in their activities, the vice-president said at his Jogoo House office here Friday when he inaugurated the Board.

He called on the new members of the board to run its activities professionally and take their responsibilities with zeal and urged the board to embrace the new information technology by going digital and connecting to the Internet.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, who was also present, said the department would organize an induction course for the new board members to enable them take up their new responsibilities effectively.
