BRUNEI-MUARA District representatives Ak Adi Nazri Pg Hj Jofri and Yumni Haziqah Mohammad were adjudged winners of the National Musabaqah Tilawah Al-Quran Competition, or the Al-Quran Reading Competition for Youths yesterday.
The two representatives were among eight finalists from the Youth Tilawah Al-Quran scheme who pitted against each other at the Islamic Da’wah Centre.
Ak Adi Nazri scored 83 per cent with his recital from Surah An Naml while Yumni Haziqah scored 84 per cent with her recital of a verse from Surah An Nisaa.
The second place winner in the male category went to Abd Qawiyuddin Suhaili, a representative from Belait who scored 78 per cent with his recital from Surah Al-Baqarah.
Meanwhile, Dhabith Al Mubarak Hj Md Juanda from Brunei-Muara scored 77 per cent, securing third position in the competition with his recital from Surah Al-Baqarah.
For the female category, second place went to Dk Fauziah Pg Hj Jofri with 83 per cent with her recital of a verse from Surah Ali Imran. Nurul Amirah Maidin bagged third place with 82 per cent with a verse recital from Surah Al Anaam.
The competition is an annual activity organised by the Co-curriculum and Continuing Education Unit, Islamic Education Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The objective of the competition was to encourage students to expand their talent and capability in Al-Quran reading. It also aimed to improve the quality of Al-Quran reading among the students involved in the scheme to prepare them for a more advanced level of Al-Quran reading.
The competition has been organised annually for students under the scheme since it was first established in 1997. The scheme is opened to Bruneians aged from 12 to 18.
Currently, 1,441 students are registered under the scheme throughout the country.
Ustaz Hj Ismail Hj Abd Manap, director of Islamic Studies Department, said the number indicates that the scheme is well received by the youth in Brunei.
“Hopefully, through the scheme, our country will continue to have quality qari and qariah (male and female Al-Quran readers),” he said.
Ustaz Hj Ismail also presented the prizes to the winners yesterday.
