PUBLIC feedback and participation were excellent this year for the five-day Radio Televisyen Brunei Media Carnival (RTBMC), which held its last day at the International Convention Centre (ICC) yesterday with RTB team as well as the visitors expressed their satisfaction.

“The feedback that we received from the public this year is very good,” said Shaikh Hj Hanafiyah Shaik Hj Ahmad, Deputy Chairman of the RTBMC 2010.

“Compared to last year, there has been a great improvement because this year, we (RTB) have brought our five new channels, application of the games/game portals and presented them directly to the public so that they are more aware that RTB now has these services,” he added.

Shaikh Hj Hanafiyah further said that the winners of the “I’ve Got Talent” and “Battle of the Bands” competitions were also given the chance to perform last night to a public audience.

“This carnival is our way of providing a platform for children, youth and other talented people here in Brunei,” said Ridzuan Hj Ahmad, Chairman of RTBMC 2010. “Looking at the participation, ‘I’ve Got Talent’ had more than 100 really talented participants who really needed our help in providing them with a suitable platform in which they can broadcast their talents,” he added. “This year, we are also giving the public the chance to contribute their ideas and propositions to rename RTB, which is part of our rebranding program. So the lucky ones who are chosen will have the honour of rebranding RTB for the future.”

He added: “We have also given the public an opportunity to try and see how it feels like to be a television/news presenter or radio DJ through a series of auditions and tryouts. We record their performance which then can be viewed from TV, our website or even a customised DVD for them to take back home with them.”

Shahrul Hj Ahmad, an 18-year-old who participated in the television presenter booth, said that he was reluctant at first to try it but then found it quite fun. “Being in front of a camera can be very unnerving, but RTB made it fun so I didn’t feel nervous once I got the feel of it and started having more fun being on television!”

A 16-year-old girl, who wanted to be referred to as Aemi, said that she wanted to join the “I’ve Got Talent” competition but was unaware of it at first. “If only I knew that a talent show was being held here, I would have joined. But then again, having to perform in front of the public is too frightening for me. I might freeze on stage or even run off crying,” Aemi said. She was happy that she instead got to meet some of her favourite radio DJs and took pictures with them.

About the new look of RTBMC, she told The Brunei Times, “It looks better than last year but I think that the Consumer Fair had something to do with boosting awareness for the carnival.”

RTB will host a roadshow for this coming school holidays in March and will include everything present during the RTBMC but on a minor scale as it will be presented to all four districts in the country.
