THE French Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Mr Louis Le Vert and British High Commissioner, Mr Rob Fenn jointly hosted a reception to mark the transfer from France to the United Kingdom of the representation of the European Presidency, commonly known as ‘local presidency’ in the Sultanate.
Among the invited guests were senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, members of the media, and EU citizens residing in Brunei.
The presidency of the European Council is elected by the council every two and a half years in accordance with the treaty of Lisbon effective as of December 1, 2009. The first and current holder of the office was Mr Herman van Rompuy, former Prime Minister of Belgium.
The Councils of Ministers of Foreign Affairs at the European Union are now chaired by the Commisioner for Foreign Relations and Vice President of the European Commission, who is simultaneously High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs. The other ministerial meetings continue to be chaired by the ministers of one member state on a rotating basis. After Sweden in the second half of 2009, this Member State is now in Spain for the first half of 2010.
