146 ‘special letters’ issued in Immigration operation

Danial Norjidi Feb 3rd, 2010 .

TWO foreign nationals were brought to the Law Enforcement Section of the Immigration and National Registration Department on Monday night for failing to produce valid immigration passes.

Some 146 “special letters” were also given out during the operation codenamed “Ops Cekap 17/2010″, which was conducted by the section.

Among the sites targetted in the operation were a restaurant, a mobile phone repair shop and a salon in the Gadong area as well as an IDD telephone shop in Kg Tanjong Nagka, Sengkurong.

A team of 10 officers led by the Chief Immigration Officer conducted the operation, which was aimed at checking on business premises at night.

The operation resulted in, among others, the discovery of one foreign national believed to have been working as a waiter and chef at a restaurant while on a tourist visa.

In an earlier operation on Monday, two special letters were issued to an Indonesian woman and a Thai man after they both failed to show proof of identification and were believed to have expired immigration passes.
The operation, codenamed Cekap 16/2010, was conducted by eight Immigration enforcement personnel led by the Senior Immigration Officer. The inspections were focussed on two separate places at Lot 91, Spg 52571, Bengkurong Masin and a rented house at No 61, Spg 29-59, Kg Selayun in Sengkurong.

The two were found to have remained in the country after their passes had expired, a violation of Section 15 (1) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17.

The Immigration and National Registration Department welcomes any public tip-offs on Immigration violations.
They can contact the hotline 2383555, 2383777 (BSB); 3331879, 3341938 (Belait), 5221221, 5221222 (Temburong) during office hours. Their identities will be kept confidential.
