CAIRO, Feb 5 (NNN-KUNA) — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has affirmed Egypt’s resolve to pursue the quest for peaceful solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
“Israel is the sole beneficiary of the current situation,” he said in a mass rally marking the inauguration of key development projects in the Sohag governorate, south Egypt, Thursday.
“Israel capitalizes on the stalemate of the peace talks with the Palestinians to accelerate the construction of Jewish settlements on the occupied Palestinian territories.
“The peace talks are unlikely to resume without restoring the Palestinian national unity,” the Egyptian leader said, describing the Palestine question as “the question of missed chances.”
Egypt keeps close contacts with, and pursues mediation efforts among, the differing Palestinian factions with a view to preparing the ground for the resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
Dealing with Egypt’s external relations, he said the country maintained good ties with all Arab, African and Western nations, which “reflects positively on the interests of the Egyptian citizens.”
Meanwhile, he reaffirmed strong opposition to the establishment of any foreign military base in the country whatever the justifications might be.
As for local development, Mubarak said the improvement of infrastructure in Upper Egypt was pivotal not only to raising the living standard of citizens but also to investment promotion.
The investment projects help create numerous job opportunities for the sons of the governorate, he pointed out.
Mubarak urged investors to tap the promising opportunities in the state land particularly in Sinai.
