MOHAMMAD Abd Wahab and Hjh Norbayu Saleh will be representing Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah at the Quran reading competition for zone level next month following their victory at the adult Quran reading competition at mosque level yesterday.
The qari and qariah (male and female Quran readers) category winners were among 10 participants from Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah who competed at the Quran competition at the mosque in Kg Kiarong. Organised by the mosque, the competition comprised six males competing for the qari category and four females for the qariah category.
Present during the competition as guest of honour was the head village of Kg Kiarong, Hj Md Hassan Hj Ahim, and as the chairperson was Acting Senior Religious Officer of Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Hj Haslin Pg Hj Ali.
During his welcoming speech, Hj Haslin said that the competition aimed to give an opportunity for the participants to practice and improve their Quran reading talents as well as to perform dakwah (Islamic missionary work) to increase the public’s interest in Quran reading.
Mohammad Abd Wahab scored 82 per cent with his recital of the Surah Al Baqarah verses while Hjh Norbayu scored 90 per cent with her recital of Surah Ar-Rahman verses.
In second place in the qari category was Mudim Hj Safar Hj Laji @ Kifley, who scored 73 per cent for his recital of verses from Surah Asy Syu’araa, while Hj Mohd Fazzly Hj Suhaili landed third place with 68 per cent for his recital of Surah Ash-Shafaat verses.
In the qariah category, second place was given to Pg Hjh Mashayu Pg Hj Yusof who obtained 83 per cent for reciting verses from Surah An-Nahl. Norsiah Pehin Khatib Hj Musatafa, meanwhile, was awarded third place with 81 per cent for her recital of Surah Ali ‘Imran verses.
