CARACAS, Feb 5 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – The third Venezuelan expedition to the Antarctic will set up a bi-national Venezuela-Ecuador scientific module in Greenwich Island, coordinator of the project Angel Viloria said.
In a press statement, he said Venezuela is included as a consultation member of the Antarctic Treaty together with Brazil, Ecuador, Chile and Uruguay.
The third scientific expedition to the Antarctic began on Feb 1 with a group of experts despatched to Greenwich Island in the South Shetlands archipelago, at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The Ministry of Science and Technology said that the group is currently performing environmental, geo-chemical and glaciological studies from the center of operations in the Ecuadorian Pedro Vicente Maldonado base until Feb 23.
The first expedition was in 2008 in the Bay of Hope and Deception and King George islands, and continued last year in the island of King George. The programme entails yearly campaigns of scientific research on climate change, monitoring Antarctic marine fauna and biodiversity.
Venezuela signed with Argentina an agreement of cooperation in scientific research and logistical operations projects and with Ecuador and other Latin nations for coordination of Antarctic activities. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
